As a lifelong Democrat, I believe that the fundamental mission of government is to ensure each citizen has equal access to the resources necessary for “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” I am committed to advocating and advancing projects and policies that serve the common good and which private enterprise cannot accomplish on its own.
My priorities reflect issues that are personal to so many of us living on the Cape and Islands. While the challenges laid out below impact all of us, they disproportionately impact young people. It’s time for my generation to fight for the future we want.
Fighting the Opioid Epidemic
My peers are dying, and we’re not doing enough to stop it. We need to end the stigma, treating addiction as the disease it is rather than a personal failing. We need to make sure availability and cost are not deterring factors when people are looking for the help they need. We need to stop the trafficking of fentanyl, rethink best practices for prescription pain-killers, and provide first responders with the life-saving resources they need.
Protecting Women’s Reproductive Rights
Reproductive rights are under threat, even in Massachusetts. We cannot be complacent: we must actively defend the right to choose, support women that are targeted by misleading anti-abortion programs, and expand reproductive healthcare access on the Cape and Islands.
Building a Climate-Resilient Infrastructure
Climate change is not only a political and moral crisis, but also an economic crisis that is already threatening the Cape and Islands. While disaster relief is essential, we must be proactive about how we interact with our environment. We need to protect our coastlines from further losses, conserve our wetlands, and promote sustainable practices at every level.
Protecting Affordable Housing
The rapidly rising cost of living has made it difficult for many people to remain in the towns they have worked in and loved for years. Communities that embrace their low and middle income residents rather than driving them out are always better and more vibrant for it. Our small business and service industry depend on it. We need to make sure that all families are able to have a home here, continuing to being a part of our community and strengthening the workforce of the area.
